It was actually also a bit of a selling point for the ACA.

You can have medical insurance, even decent insurance, and still have medical expenses that are more than you can afford.

I agree that the freedom of movement that a national healthcare payment system would create would be very helpful to people.

Both Sanders and Warren have repeated that information in speeches regularly. It likely isn't picked up too much by the media since a lot of the advertising revenue they get is from the pharmaceutical industry, private insurers, etc...
