It's purpose is gone.
It used to be most people would go home from work at the same time, eat dinner, and then decide which of three or four television propaganda channels they were going to watch.
And if that wasn't enough television, one could buy TV trays and TV dinners, and eat dinner while watching television.
My dad would get home from work, we'd have dinner, and then he'd pop open a beer and watch CBS news. Other dads in the neighborhood might watch NBC or ABC news. Then the family would watch their favorite television shows.
All at the same fucking time, in lockstep, a nation of zombies!
My children can't even comprehend that world. They've rarely had nine-to five jobs. They stream ALL their television, watching it when it's convenient to them. That's the way we watch television too. We watch Netflix and DVDs. We don't watch any cable, satellite, or broadcast television. What the clock says doesn't matter.
Here in the internet age of 24/7 business and services there no reason at all to keep daylight savings time. How many people have jobs where the position of the sun in the sky matters? And do they pay any attention to the clock or do they just start work around sunrise, whether or not they live in a place that changes the clock?
Our children grew up on "hospital time." That's always been disconnected from the regular rhythms of television time. When our children were young my wife and I were able to arrange our schedules such that we never needed childcare, but it also meant we were entirely disconnected from the tyranny of television schedules. All that turning the clock ahead accomplished was to force me to deal with a bunch of cranky children when I had to get them off to school.
Myself, I'm going to be really cranky tomorrow when I have to get up at five but my internal clock is saying it's four. Maybe I'll flame some people who deserve it.
