Someone who frets about heights all the time, normally ... decides to ride the elevator up the Eiffel Tower on their first trip to Europe, because they've always wanted to go up the Eiffel Tower. That sort of thing does happen ... it doesn't mean they don't have the phobia.

I agree he's completely full of shit in general, but this particular claim has been confirmed by lots of different people. We're not just taking his word on it (which means jackshit, as you point out).
