4. My first thought....

Soldiers tend to be young and healthy. To have "thousands die" would mean hundreds of thousands were infected. Not bloody likely.
So lets say they are malnourished, with rickets and hypertension and aanemia. Not a very robust force but ok. That would still mean tens of thousands infected.
I still don't believe it. Unless they have been shooting any soldier who looks sick.
sorry, a not believable story.
