(20,226 posts)46. I think that over the years - in order to sustain the emotional high of right-wing ideology they
have been forced to keep upping the anti - getting crazier and crazier as time has gone on. A similar dynamic happens in various political, religious and social movements over the years. The demand for the truest of true believing becomes unsustainable without a relentless increase in the temperature of rhetoric. We are now at the point where any semblance of civil discourse or rational thought is simply not acceptable in Republican circles. Since crazy talk is now their norm - non-insane discourse ends up sounding crazy to them. I believe it was Frank Schaeffer who used the phrase, "the fifth column of the insane."
