9. Imagine if he were to show some backbone and relent

He could say that in the face of this immense public-health challenge, he realizes that his style of politics has failed him and the American people and he will turn a new leaf, listen to the experts and get to work fast on mitigating his failure. That would earn him so much respect, he might actually get re-elected. But the sad thing is he can't. He's actually a prisoner of his own nature, a wall that he himself erected and cannot scale.
