This past weekend, I was discussing politics with the county chair of the gop from south-eastern Arizona. The topic changed to ObamaCare ... His objection: "I should not be forced to purchase a product I don't want or need."
My response: "So what happens when you or a family member gets stung by a scorpion? Do you have an extra $84,000 lying around the house?" (a recent story hit the paper where a woman was charge $84,000 to treat a scorpion sting because she was "out of network."
Chair: "To be honest, no; but because I have no debt ... I don't owe anyone anything. I would take out a mortgage on my house and pay for the treatment myself."
My response: "In this market lot's of lot. And I'm pretty certain the hospital will wait for your payment, right? But anyway, what happens when you or a family member gets stung by a scorpion AND, two years later, you daughter breaks her arm?"
Chair's response: "I'd pay for it myself!"
My response: "How ... You're still paying for the scorpion sting."
Chair's response: What are the chances that'll happen."
My response: "I other words, 'you'll hope that you don't get sick, and when you do, I get to pay for your not purchasing a product that you neither want or need'."
