(24,912 posts)And I should say that I enjoy looking at simulations like that. I've looked at numerous traffic simulations in the past and it's clear that vehicles on a freeway tend to behave like a fluid, so I find that fascinating.
The vid you linked does show a remarkable difference in transmission between the controlled queue and the random wandering, but in my experience, most people do tend to move from one side of a given grocery store to another. The problem starts when one of those people wandering down aisle 4 in front of the spices or soups or whatever, stops to look for what they want, OR turns and goes back to aisle 1 because they forgot to grab a head of lettuce. It forces everyone else to step past them or bunch up and wait to pass of just buggers up the whole thing anyway!
It's an interesting exercise though, but short of limiting the number of people in the door at a given time, and enforcing a "one-way" type policy for gathering groceries, I just don't see the model working.
