Instead of the Trump campaign paying for his rallies, they are being paid by the taxpayer. In addition, there's the violation of campaigning inside the White House!

It's all a pretend coronavirus news presser.

You are 100% correct:
"Trump wouldn't hold them if he didn't think they helped him."

It's a ruse. Trump's playing us all. He's conning the American people, and the media knowingly enables him.
