(11,767 posts)What the President says IS important because the office has historically had significant importance and authority. If the president went in front of cameras and said, "We have information that alien space craft are entering earth's atmosphere" That would be extremely significant. When racist shit head, Woodrow Wilson said of the film Birth of A Nation, "It's like writing history with Lightning. My only regret is that it is all so terribly true." He gave succor and substance to the "lost cause" and aided in the proliferation of the Klan, which grew to hundreds of thousands if not more during his presidency.
Trump has not been "deferential to governors and mayors" he has been feckless and lacking in any leadership. His main goal is to avoid blame, which is why he uses such weaselly language all of the time, like when he said he was going to "Hold back funding from the WHO, strongly" then when pushed he said, "I never said that, I said we were looking at it" when he clearly said the former.
Trump is a liar and he is arrogant despite being ignorant and incompetent. The purpose of the President, ESPECIALLY in a crisis, is to provide stability and strength for Americans who are scared. It is presumed that he President has the most up to date information and is being honest with the people regardless of how it may look politically. If something bad is happening, the President tells us honestly, while still trying to maintain our resolve and hope.
Trump uses words to escape blame or to puff himself up. That is all. The media needs to keep challenging him on that and calling it out.
