(23,200 posts)moving the ball forward toward that end. In other words, progress on redressing social ills actually matters to him more than merely staking out a supposedly "righteous" position in the abstract.
Yes, sometimes Bernie has positioned himself in front of a curve that he hopes he can help move toward him, but never so far out in front of it as to become politically irrelevant. THAT is skilled political craft of a sort that too many leftist agitators are incapable of mastering, and as a result too often a realistic leftist vision for America never stands any chance of advancing toward enactment.
Bernie gets attacked from all sides. Some Democratic Party purists tend to anger at the degree of political Independence Bernie maintains. Some Movement purists tend to anger at the degree of cooperation and coordination with the Democratic Party that Bernie maintains. But Bernie cares about both addressing social ills AND winning, because ultimately it takes the latter in order to achieve the former. He gets it and I deeply respect him for that. A Movement that can only divide us when we desperately need to unite in common cause has no power beyond the power to obstruct the progress that lies within our reach.
Fortunately the vast majority of Sanders supporters realize what he is trying to do and fully support his call for unity behind Joe Biden now.
