They prayed. It was just not officially led.
I'm guessing they're thinking this incident (if it indeed did really happen) was some sort of defiant gesture. But they are mistaken.
I obviously can't speak for everyone who objects to prayer in schools, but I suspect that a great many of us would have no problem with an unofficial moment of silence in place of their traditional prayer. And if some people spontaneously pray among themselves in small groups, fine. I doubt the ruling prohibits that.
I don't get why the Principal had to make a big stink out of such a non-issue.
