In reply to the discussion: Man Who Called Ohio's Lockdown Order 'Bullshit' Has Succumbed To COVID-19 [View all]frazzled
(18,402 posts)many thousands who have succumbed to this illness have brought it about themselves because of lack of responsibility. Yes, this guy (and others) have been irresponsible, but COVID-19 has taken the lives of many innocent and well-meaning people as well.
I just don't want to give the impression that somehow people in general are responsible for their infections.
I recall the funeral of a friend who died many decades ago (the early 1970s), at a relatively young age, from cancer. There were mumblings all around the room about "why": it must have been the time he spent in Morocco; it was this or that. I wanted to scream at this attempt to place blame for a disease that nobody has full control over.
Neither should we give the impression that those who have survived are better fighters (implying that those who did not survive simply did not fight hard enough).
This Ohio guy died from potentially self-inflicted wounds, and it certainly is ironic. But we need to be careful to not give too much agency to people with respect to this virus. It is a killer: in general, most people are not killing themselves.
