(11,767 posts)The idea that we shouldn't "speak ill of the dead" because there are also innocent victims, is clearly something that right wingers use, and expect liberals to back away from because of social propriety. We are certainly not responsible for the things that are beyond our control. We should not blame people for being poor, having few options, and thus not making the "best choices". We see things systemically.
We can and should certainly distinguish between people who die from everyday activity and people like McDaniel who defy the warnings, try to publicly advocate for defiance against protective measures, then die from the "hoax" or "bullshit" or "madness" that they are dismissing.
Did he deserve to die? Can't say. Am I glad? NO. Not at all. Is it a tragedy? I don't know. Is it a tragedy that someone knowingly swims in shark infested waters after countless warnings that there are sharks that will eat you?
