Worse than tuberculosis, actually. Not at all similar to STDs, which, as their name implies, are spread by sex, which is pretty close contact.

So, where's the shaming and blaming of a Scarlet Letter? The moron feels fine (I guess) but is contagious and a danger to herself and others.
