He tries to sound lofty but it always comes out woolly. Yes, there's been a lot of death, but destruction? He threw that in because it sounded good, a classic example of woolly prose. People who write like that are like the cargo cults of the South Seas, building facsimiles of airplanes that can't fly. They've seen people use rousing words, felt duly roused by same, and try to use the same ones whether they have any logical bearing on the meaning.
