I think this is more of an Evangelical or Fundamentalist problem in essence and it is being used, of course, to manipulate more gullible people, (I am not denigrating them here) who have a stronger tendency to believe as opposed to knowing.

The term, "Christian" is really a blanket term and Christianity has divisions and sects. In America, we may tend to lump it all together, which, in a sense, works for the theocratic Evangelists who are extreme fundamentalist literalness, to but it succinctly.

I use the term, "McChristian". It is a fast food form of the religion with Jesus at the drive-up window handing out the goodies. It goes right along with a materialistic, consumerism mentality and so, it is way off the rails and has strayed far from the original tenets. Televangelists and the prosperity gospel churches are good examples of how much it has been distorted and made to fit a capitalist model.
