(3,626 posts)...as another commenter noted. Here in the NOLA area there were several very popular drive-in theaters when I was a kid, but one by one they were sold to developers. Piping the sound in over FM is better than the old can speakers, but we used to turn the car completely off for the movie -- even during summer, we'd just roll all the windows down. Modern cars drain the battery hard when the radio is running and a lot full of idling cars can't be a good thing. I do miss the experience, the smell of the BIC mosquito repellant coils, the greasy pizza from the concession stand, even the hike to the restrooms was unique to the experience. But I also like the reclining leather seats and bar at the newly refitted AMC. And as much as I'd like to help them stay in business, now that they will be allowed to reopen at 25% capacity I'm going to wait and make sure there's not a second surge in new cases before meeting my father there for a movie again.
