(17,519 posts)But there is little supporting evidence and November is a long way away. We are already numbed to the number of deaths, I don't think that it will cause much of a stir when they exceed 100,000, or for that matter if we exceed 200,000 before the election. If we are at 150,000 dead in November, Trump will be exclaiming a great victory based on the fact that, without his "perfect leadership" we would be looking at 1,000,000 dead. His argument will resonate with his core. Keep in mind, that during the worst leadership crisis in American history, Trump's numbers are still competitive, a situation that I find mind boggling.
What will defeat Trump will be an attack on what he has tried to sell as his great achievement, the economy.
Economic issues will hit home with the undecided voters, who will decide the election, only when the small group in the middle are in jeopardy of losing their homes and going hungry. That is, to many people, a fate worse than death. I suspect that the Republicans will have a change of heart about further economic support for the working people around October and bless us with another check, taking some pressure off until after the elections. The Democrats would be forced into a Hobson's Choice, of supporting the Republican vote buying or appearing heartless. The combined power of the Presidency, the Senate and the Courts is frightening.
We may eek out a Presidential win, but, I predict it will be a close run thing, and that we will not wipe the Republicans off the map. The truth of the matter is that if we don't also win the Senate, and retain the house, then will reside in a Republican stalemate for the next four years. Biden would be able to be about as effective in advancing progressive issues as Carter was. Meanwhile we will watch our slow demise as the Senate continues to stack the courts with Fascists supporters.
I know that painting a dark picture is unpopular around here, but we are NOT out of the woods yet. We lost the last presidential election by being overconfident and complacent . If we make that mistake again, it will be fatal.
