8. my town disbanded its police dept some years ago

The police force was expensive, so when the chief was sent to jail on corruption charges the town decided that the extra expense was not worth any advantages of having a dedicated police dept. The office is still in the town hall, I think, but otherwise the county sheriff's deputies patrol here instead.
