Many of them are poorly educated and also do not use appropriate grammar or speak in clear, coherent sentences. The anti-intellectual mindset has been around for a long time, as if the beliefs in bad science are just as valid as the beliefs in actual, proven science. I remember a middle school history book teaching that the framers of our Constitution were just farmers like everyone else. No slam on farmers, but most them do not have the education that people like Jefferson and Adams had, including in Jefferson’s case years at the French Court. Perhaps somewhere back in the 80s is when the notion started that intellectual competence in our leaders doesn’t matter. As in George W’s case, he was someone you could have a beer with. I’m not saying that W is stupid because he’s not, but he is also not an intellectual in Obama’s category. I prefer a president who has the capacity to think and to assimilate facts about the world, but I’d also love to sit down and have a beer with Obama!
