It's simple:

Respect is earned. If you command or force people to give it to you, that's being a bully who confuses respect with fear.

Trump has not earned any respect from Americans who truly understand that and now, he is making worse for himself by ignoring that. A bully with a big mouth and obsession with himself, well, what's to respect there? Just having a title does not do the trick, that's just being a titular head and it is rather empty and meaningless without the corresponding behaviors and actions.

What, did he really believe that hanging a sign would make him seem reputable or confer the honors on him he does not at all deserve. Infamy is the legacy he is forging as he takes each desperate step down into the pit of perfidy. He will go down as the best of something ever, but it won't be related to his projections and boisterous facade.
