were also stronger). But there was no national unemployment insurance, nor many of the social safety net programs we now take for granted, like Social Security. Life in rural America was pretty brutal with major portions unelectrified and with hunger and disease rampant.(See Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" for descriptions of the downside of rural America.)
