47. It will depend on the state of the race in July

Biden really wants Klobuchar. She totally fits his criteria and was loyal and supportive even within the primary process. He mentored her as she came into the Senate and worked closely with her as VP, as she was one of the main conduits to the Republican caucus as one of Reed's main Republican whisperers. Given a snap choice under pressure she would be the pick.

But …

He needs to win so by the middle of the July the course of the Virus will be clear as the science and economics catch up. At that point he will know if he needs to play defense and so pick someone who helps with the base. However if it looks like I expect he will make an aggressive pick that is aimed at the wavering Trump base. It really is the difference between a narrow win and a big one,

I have been fighting this fight for a long time. Democrats are really good at imagining the exercise of power, but really bad at imagining the acquisition of it. We have ceded large parts of the electorate, not by policy choices but by understanding what those choices mean.
Take M4A. That is all well and good but it is not the issue in Rural America. The issue there is not how to pay for it but how to get it. Your world looks entirely different when the drive goes from a half hour to a hour to get to the maternity ward or the emergency room.

In the cold hard math of electoral politics a flip counts more then twice as much as a new voter or activating a leaner. It also moves he window of possibility much more as those voter invest in your success.

That is why Klobuchar more then any other candidate is the best choice. Not because she will bring huge amounts of any state EC votes or any particular demographic, but because she will allow those already inclined to go to Joe to solidify that and those who would want to make the switch but are wary to ally those concerns.

If Biden does pick Klobuchar I will breath a huge sigh of relief because that will show a great confidence. What is more it will make Trump's playbook almost unusable. It will be very hard to generate hatred and fear against "Sleepy Joe" and Klobuchar. Doing so will only really hurt him. What is more Biden and Klobuchar are at their core pragmatists not only are the solutions to the current crisis much more inline with progressive goals, but just the huge amount of pending legislation already agreed to by the Senate Democratic caucus and the House will profoundly change the way forward.
