To them, the flag represents patriotism. They use the flag to label themselves as patriots, while ignoring the actual responsibilities of a patriot ( or even the basic responsibilities of a citizen).
Similarly, wearing a cross while acting very non Christian.
Like a kid wearing a sports jersey to label themselves as athletes, while not being remotely athletic.
In their mind, the symbol is more important than what it represents.
