the bill was fake. He was pointed out as the person who gave it, but it doesn't seem to have been "He was trying to get away with passing a counterfeit bill" but "I have a counterfeit bill, I'm supposed to report that, and oh yes, he's still around."

As I said there's a lot out there that's not true but he appears to have been well known and liked.
