Well, he was mimicking Lincoln, (who walked nightly to that church to pray about what to do) and held a bible upside down and backward, (Hail Satan!). To top it off, he stood in front of a church that is one of the most liberal denominations Christianity has.

How's that for jokes on him?

I would note that Lincoln didn't need tear gas to get there, though. Maybe he had some bear mace, I don't know. There was a civil war going on.
