(26,161 posts)Depending on what study you look at, at least a third and up to 75 percent of people classified as "obese" are metabolically healthy, meaning their blood pressure isn't elevated, they don't have high cholesterol and they're not insulin-resistant. In addition, unfit skinny people are twice as likely to get diabetes over 20 years as fit fat people. Seeing "fat" and saying "unhealthy" hurts fat people you care about by reinforcing our fatphobic society.
Is carrying extra weight hard on joints? Sure. Does obesity correlate with heart or breathing problems? It can. But focusing on the number on the scale is a mistake that also results in health problems. Many, many people who have lost weight because of depression, sickness or eating disorders find their can't stop talking about how "great" they look now, when they still feel like shit (or are actively battling a mental illness). It's all connected. There's plenty to go after Trump for, but making fun of his weight simply contributes to a world that makes it harder for our fat friends and allies to navigate.
