I know my ex father-in-law, who passed back in 2002, was one of those. He was really smart, and a great father-in-law. I loved him.
Yet, over the last decade of his life, he took to listening to right-wing AM talk radio and was well into the process of becoming a radical libertarian before he died. For example, he absolutely hated the Clintons, and was utterly convinced they were responsible for killing a whole bunch of people, anyone who got in their way, really. And that was straight from his listening to talk radio for hours every day.
I'm sure you are well aware of the Powell Manifesto in 1971 that laid all of this out, and of course the snake Reagan's killing of the Fairness Doctrine by pocket veto in 1987. Those things laid the groundwork of what we have now..
