Every country in Western Europe then had Communist anti-American factions. Some of it due to Vietnam War. France had the Action Directe.

In Italy, the Red Brigades actually kidnapped and murdered a former Prime Minister, Aldo Moro.

In West Germany, the Red Army Faction.

However, as far as I know, this never stopped American Tourism to Europe. And it wasn't anywhere near as dangerous as going to Vietnam. But if you had to go around France and knock on doors as an American, you would make a more satisfying target than average.
