attempts to work with other congregations to affect "liberal" agenda.

Missouri Synod Lutherans, along with the much smaller Wisconsin Synod, align with the Catholics in being seriously anti-abortion. They almost grudgingly go along with poverty and civil rights programs, but are conservative to the core. The Episcopal Church is seriously divided over sexual matters, with abortion and gay rights being anathema to a large chunk of it. They keep avoiding actually making a statement.

And then there's the local black churches, which are also all for feeding the poor and reining in the cops, but don't dare talk abortion or LGBT lest you get your ass handed to you.

Outfits like Focus on the Family grow because they fit into the concept of prosperity gospel-- essentially the idea that no matter what Christ taught, greed is really good. All of their talk of Christian ethics is basically a cover for "What's in it for me".

"How can I help?" is much more difficult concept to get across. And it's made more difficult by the social and doctrinal differences between different churches.
