19. It was long before hate radio and Fox

I moved to Las Vegas in summer 1984 and was immediately stunned at all the incredibly shallow white males in the sports betting scene. A high percentage had relocated from the South. They despised Democrats and couldn't believe I was a Democrat. They wanted to believe the entire white world was every bit as bitter and hateful and fearful as they were.

Those years helped me to understand that Trump had a big chance in 2016. The people I met in 1984 always voted Republican but none of the candidates mesmerized them like Trump did.

They are not bright people from a big picture perspective. They can be perfectly proficient in their own profession, and sound reasonable on other topics. But when it comes to politics they absolutely believe that Republicans keep their taxes at 10% level that Democrats want to assign, and that Democrats will take away their guns and their religion while tracking their every move toward breaking in during the middle of the night and stealing their freedom.

It is a nutcase world. I don't mind telling them that. I have laughed in their face countless times. They think I am the wacko for not sharing the fear.

BTW, that type is going to vote in huge numbers all over the country in 2020. Trump is going to rack up turnout numbers in rural areas that have never been seen before. They aren't going to meekly look away and allow their savior to go down.
