I have a lot of problems with Steve Schmidt, but he's right on the money here:

Edited to add: trump is even more of an idiot for quoting Schmidt because Schmidt was criticizing Bolton for refusing to testify before the House. He was criticizing Bolton for not protecting us from trump.
