13. HIPAA is a healthcare entity law

It doesn’t pertain to the general public.

Although each individual workplace may have its own rules HIPAA does not pertain to non healthcare disclosure.

For example, if an employee of a workplace is pregnant, and going out on leave, it’s not illegal for a workplace to disclose that. Unless, of course, the employs a patient of the workplace, (OB/GYN employee)

If someone I know sees me in the grocery store, and tells me she has cancer I can go home and tell my husband. If, on the other hand, I work at the hospital, and she comes in for treatment of said cancer I could be prosecuted if I went home and told my husband.
