The United States has always been a loose federation of rival regional subcultures. While it's led to a lot of ill, we've found ways past it in times where external threats emerged to alter our perspective. Since the Cold War ended, we've lacked that unifying threat and the result has been polarization and fracturing to an extent we haven't seen since the mid-19th century.
I don't have any warm remembrances of the Cold War's existential dread, but we badly need something to patch this country together again.

The meanest thing Putin could do to trump is...nothing. Not take his calls. Nada. Nothing.

He might just be leaving the rest to his Chinese and Russian axis leaders to bring him his 'win.'
