'This motor is shot' conveys it has been used too hard to be worth repair, and there are other usages in which 'shot' conveys that something is finished and done.

Part of the art of deniability is employment of phrases that can be taken in various ways by 'those with ears to hear', so I am not quarreling with your view, merely laying out the likely defense, which I expect will prove adequate when complaints are made to the management....
