who they knew, what strings their parents could pull, how much money their parents had, which fancy school they went to, and who owed their family favors. A few folks get in because they fulfill some gender or racial profile that the company wants to tout (and they pick these people by using the "who they know" factor, too.)

I have had bosses that could barely tie their shoes, and they were making hundreds of thousands of dollars to basically sit there. The rest of us, whose salaries the bosses resented paying, did any actual work. Not only did we do our own work, we did theirs, too -- reminding them of deadlines, meetings, etc., all of which was clearly shown on their own calendars. It was an eye-opener.
