(2,309 posts)The reason for the white component is obvious.
What about the no college degree component? First of all, one does not need to have a degree to be well informed and intelligent. But, Trump is aggressively and assertively ignorant. He is anti education and anti science. He speaks what, fifth grade level? Lower? He avoids reading. He appeals to those who did not like school, those who probably struggled or failed or were somewhat humiliated in school, those who as adults complain about paying taxes to support schools, those who vote against funding for schools, those who hated Obama probably because he sounded intelligent (and was intelligent) in addition to the racist thing.
Most other countries shunt students into programs where they are likely to thrive, to enjoy learning. But in this country we try to make everyone get a good "general education" which pretty much means some degree of calculus and Shakespeare. Society needs a wide variety of skilled craftsmen and women who are good at what they do and who enjoy what they do, who take pride in what they do. Even modest skills such as delivery or cab driver can be courteous and proud of it.
Our approach to education for all is also very expensive, not very efficient. But in a society owned by big for-profit industries and where the pursuit of happiness means accumulation of wealth at any cost (FOX News, big pharma, oil, come to mind) is it possible to change our approach to education and training?
