I think many of them see Trump as a mirror of who and what they are.
Considering that, they may be the kind of people you wouldn't want to live next door to, shop around, rent from, make any business deals with because they will look for ways to screw you, etc.
Yes, there may be that many Americans who are the spitting image of Trump and proud of it.
