I was thinking along the lines of Earth finally having enough of humans. Has waited long enough for man to get it together and stop destroying the place. So, we get a highly contagious virus that causes infertility. Earth protecting itself--Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jurassic Park): '...I'm simply saying that life, uh... finds a way.' You wouldn't believe it if it was a movie script. (Someone above mentioned Children of Men)
