it looked to be slipping away from Trump then as well- he got crushed in the 3rd debate and polls were trending to Clinton. Then, the bottom dropped out.

I think he may be counting on the Durham investigation and/or some BS with Hunter Biden & Burisma and/or China to swing votes his way in October some time.
