4. I naturally hate looking like a germaphobe.

Before the pandemic, I took normal precautions against germs and viruses. Washed my hands. Didn’t touch anything that I knew might make me sick.

But I didn’t go overboard in my worrying. I didn’t obsess over flying in airplanes, or what was in a hotel room, or how well a restaurant cleaned their dishes.

I ate at buffets. I swam in public places. I slept fine in hotels. I shook hands.

Knock on wood, so far I’ve had a good immune system and I wasn’t going to let worrying about germs ruin my life.

When I first heard about having to wear masks, I naturally recoiled. Wearing a mask always seemed like a symbol of someone who was overly obsessed about getting sick.

But I soon realized what we were dealing with is not normal or ordinary and as much as I haven’t taken strict precautions in the past, the extraordinary situation required it.

So I did what I needed to do, and didn’t complain about it. I wore the damn mask.

Now, once the threat has subsided and we are adequately protected, do I still want to wear a mask?

Hell no.

And I plan on enjoying restaurants and hotels and airplanes and public swimming places like I did before, without worrying. And shaking hands and all that.

We’re just not there yet. That’s all.

So until then and only until then, I wear the mask.
