When this whole thing took off in March and I went back and read about the Spanish Flu pandemic in the late 19 teens on the CDC website, I wondered, will this bug change and morph like the Spanish Flu did and get more infectious and more deadly? When I queried others with more medical knowledge about infectious disease, most agreed it would continue to evolve/mutate but the nature of viruses is to keep people infected so they can continue to do the spreading but not in their interest to kill their host. BUT they also agreed that with each mutation, the virus isn't really driving, it's rolling dice and sometimes gets more infectious (good) but accidently hits on a variant that is also more deadly (ooops---bad!). In short, there seems to be no clear path one can plot as the more folks that get infected the more petri dishes the disease has to play with and the more mutations we'll see with greater chance it will hit on a REALLY bad one that is more infectious and more deadly. I am sure the virus will send President Trump, Gov's DeSantis, Abbot, et. al. cards saying "Thanks for all the help!!!".
On a chillingly similar note, watching the economic fall out of all this, when back in April/May/June this was going to be over quick and we'd have a V shaped recovery, any comparison to the 1929 stock market crash was dismissed as over the top pessimism. When now one compares the latest data, and governments and investors reactions to it, comparisons to 1929 seem more and more apt. When the Fitch rating service puts all on notice that debt levels on the world's reserve currency ($) and "lender of last resort" is near out of hand, one has to wonder.
I pray for a Biden victory and Democratic sweep of Congress and many state level offices as well but can only wonder why anyone would want the jobs they are all seeking as the clean up from where Trump and 'Rona have put us will be a terribly painful and messy affair that will take years and overshadow much other good work that should be done but maybe can't for lack of time and money. God help us all.
