GOP Senator Ben Sasse Calls Trump's Executive Orders "Unconstitutional Slop" [View all]

Over the last few weeks, Republicans and Democrats have fought over how to help unemployed Americans during the pandemic. The GOP was looking to cut unemployment payments, while Democrats wanted to keep them where they were. The lawmakers were unable to come to an agreement.

Donald Trump stepped in on Saturday, signing Executive Orders that cut the unemployment boost as well as the payroll tax. Many Republicans came out in favor of the move. Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, however, was appalled by Trump’s move, calling it “unconstitutional slop.”

“The pen-and-phone theory of executive lawmaking is unconstitutional slop,” the GOP senator wrote in a statement. “President Obama did not have the power to unilaterally rewrite immigration law with DACA, and President Trump does not have the power to unilaterally rewrite the payroll tax law.”

Lindsey Graham said of the move, “I appreciate the President taking this decisive action but would much prefer a congressional agreement. I believe President Trump would prefer the same.”
