8. The upswing in civil unrest started about 10 years ago

The 2000s were only average, with an upswing during the 2010s. After high levels of civil unrest in the 1960's/1970s, the 1980s and 1990s were relatively quiet.

It's most likely due to economic decline, particularly for low-wage and unemployed people, plus the growing use of social media to achieve "color revolution" effects.
