surprised me. It fits with his previous statements and behavior. McCain, the Khans, his draft deferments, on and on.
Even the bit about not wanting the rain to spoil his coiffure was exactly what I surmised back when these events first transpired. I distinctly remember laughing about the story and telling my wife that very thing.
What it calls to mind is the last scene in "The Godfather II," when we saw the Corleone family around the dinner table talking about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Sonny showed disdain for service personnel.
"They're 'saps' because they risk their lives for strangers," he told Michael.
"Nah, that's Pop talking ... They risked their lives for their country," Michael said.
"Your country ain't your blood, you remember that," Sonny said.
Michael said he enlisted in the Marines. A shocked hush fell across the table.
"Why'd you do that?" Tom Hagen asked. "Pop had to pull a lot of strings to get you that deferment."
Sonny loses his temper and almost struck Michael. Tom Hagen mentioned Pop's "big plans" for Michael's future as if the military had spoiled them.
Sonny one last time called Michael "stupid."
Sounds mighty familiar, no?
