I was always horrified by the notion that the mother's life was always secondary to the unborn child. That thinking may have softened among rank and file Catholics, but I bet if we survey the clergy, we'd find they still mostly think that way.

Donald Trump is supposedly a Presbyterian. The Presbyterians I know are very liberal and totally horrified that he identifies with their church.

You are so right about the truly devout not clobbering us over the head with their beliefs. I have several friends who are sincere, thoughtful, believing members of some church or another. We occasionally have conversations that wander in the territory of belief or faith, and it is precisely their thoughtfulness and lack of dogma that I find attractive.

For me, I completely and totally left the Catholic Church by the time I was 20. I will often say that I was raised Catholic, because that upbringing does inform how I think now.
