Perhaps because it's too idiotic to be believable.

What's the point in hammering on something so many people will dismiss with 'he must have been joking'.

This is your argument: Don't make a point that the comment was "idiotic" because some people will "dismiss with 'he must have been joking'"?

You're right, some people are doing that right here. Some are not.
