37. It is a multi-layered and wry joke

Leaving aside whether it strikes one as funny, I heard it as a complicated line of humour..

If she had said Obama is gay it would be easier to read.

She gives the long wind-up about all these men who died for our right to be different (which for Madonna's live show audiences is readily understood as being about being gay, not black) and then says that for better or worse, it got us a black muslim president, which is some amazing shit.

It's a whiplash... first, almost everyone in the audience is well aware that Obama is not a Muslim, and that RWers say he is as an ignorant slur, and then you get the... wait, isn't being a black muslim compatible with what was just being said? Wouldn't that be cool if things really were that wide open?

She is owning the Muslim thing as a taunt, like, "Yeah... we've got a black muslim president, pecker-wood. Deal with it."

She is also saying that if he was a black Muslim that would be cool. While also tweeting a "some animals are more equal than others" thing... he's black! Hooray. We love diversity! And he's Muslim. Wha???

If she had said that for better or worse, thanks to Lincoln and MLK we have a black openly gay president I think people would have gotten the double-barbed dada of the thing.

It's not a political stump speech, and it is aimed at a heavily gay male audience that appreciates a certain irreverence as a good unto itself.

(If one wanted to be worried about some Madonna show, her revealing her big Obama tramp stamp right after this clip here is at least as edgy.)
