(40,917 posts)One of the most terrifying things I ever witnessed as a child was him riding a bicycle.
He's laughing his head off and he's going to die!!!
By some miracle he did not.
The Army Air Corp, in it's great wisdom, did not let him fly their planes.
They did train him to be a mechanic, and then an engineer. He was an officer in World War II. He had a big black car and an enlisted driver. It was one of his duties to carry a "get out of jail free" card for misfits deemed essential to the war effort. So far as I know he only made it so far as Alaska, which was pretty good for a kid who thought of Cheyenne Wyoming as the Big City he'd run off to, a city that did not live up to his expectations.
He met my grandma in Hollywood. She and her sister had run off from the Northern California dairy industry for similar reasons.
My grandfather was later an Apollo Project engineer. Bits of his metal took men to the moon and back. Some of these bits of metal are in the Smithsonian, others on the moon.
He never talked about World War II stuff. It was all tied up in secrets.
His great pride was the Apollo stuff. He'd always talk about that.
I don't think Trump is that kind of klutz. I can't picture him riding a bicycle and laughing his head off. And we all know what Trump thinks of military service.
